This gallery is dedicated to the russian mining settlements Barentsburg, Pyramiden and Grumant in Svalbard. While the mine in Barentsburg is still in use, Grumant and Pyramiden were shut down centuries ago.
Pyramiden has been a ghost town for years. But a handful of russians, are working hard, to establish this historic mining city as a tourist destination. They have reopened one of the old buildings and a few of the rooms are freshly renovated for visitors, that want to stay overnight.
Barentsburg and Pyramiden are easy to reach during the summer season in Svalbard. The fastest way to get to both destinations between May and September is the catamaran by Hurtigruten Svalbard.
You can still reach Barentsburg by boat in winter, but if you want to go to Pyramiden in winter, you have to arrange a privat transfer with the Arctic travel company Grumant or with one of the local guide services in Longyearbyen.
There are no tours to the old mine Grumant, but you can see the decaying buildings on several boat tours from the sea, or you can hike there with a private guide in summer.
